Why Traveling Solo to Morocco as a Black Woman Was One of My Most Empowering Experiences

Traveling solo can be both exhilarating and nerve-wracking, especially as a Black woman venturing into new territories. But when I decided to book a solo trip to Morocco, besides it being my first solo trip ever, it was a trip that I discovered a world of peace, healing, and adventure that transformed me.

Why Morocco?

I chose Morocco somewhat impulsively—it was on my bucket list, and something about the culture and vibrancy called to me. Admittedly, my family thought I was crazy for going alone, but I knew my soul needed this journey.

Is Morocco Safe for Solo Black Women Travelers?

Safety was one of the first concerns I had—and I heard plenty of warnings from others. But my experience as a first-time traveler was overwhelmingly positive. From Marrakech to the Sahara Desert, I felt welcomed and respected. Locals were kind and curious, and I didn’t feel out of place.

The only nerve-wracking moment? Arriving at the airport at midnight and figuring out how to get to my resort. But even that was surprisingly easy, thanks to pre-booked transportation options. Oh, and I guess I can add trying to shop in the heart of the Markets. Think of it like a trip to Times Square, there are plenty street performers and vendors that will definitely take advantage of you and your money if you give them the time of day. I may or may not have gotten scammed haha.

Affording a Solo Trip to Morocco

One of the biggest surprises was how affordable this dream trip turned out to be. I found a package deal on Expedia for around $1,800, which included flights and an all-inclusive hotel. Compared to domestic options I was considering, Morocco was the clear winner.

I also booked two incredible excursions:

  1. A traditional cooking class with a local woman, where we shopped in the markets and prepared an authentic Moroccan meal in her home.
  2. A desert adventure with camel riding, quad biking at sunset, and a traditional dinner with live performances.

Both experiences cost under $50 each—a small price for memories that will last a lifetime.

A Bonus Stop in Paris

Traveling from Atlanta, I had a 12-hour layover in Paris, giving me a chance to explore the City of Light. I navigated my way to the Eiffel Tower and soaked in the magic of Paris before continuing to Morocco. It was like having two trips in one!

The Takeaway

As a Black woman, solo travel often feels like stepping into uncharted territory. Morocco gave me the confidence to trust myself, the kindness of strangers, and the beauty of the unknown. From the bustling souks of Marrakech to the peaceful desert nights, every moment reminded me that the most exciting adventures are on the other side of fear.

So, to my fellow solo travelers—especially my Black sisters—don’t hesitate. Morocco is waiting to embrace you, just as it did me. Your soul will thank you.
